Rapid Prototyping Technology

Prototyping used in product development were traditionally fabricated using simple hand tools and materials such as wood, paper, clay or ceramic etc. Metals and polymers were used more recently with the availability of machine tools. Development of prototypes by traditional means is both labour-intensive and time consuming.

Rapid Prototyping (RP) is a recent technology using computers and computer – controlled equipment to fabricate prototypes automatically and rapidly. In Rapid Prototyping three-dimensional physical objects are fabricated from their computer Aided Design (CAD) models, usually in limited quantities.

RP allows designers to quickly (in hours or days instead of weeks or months) create tangible prototypes of their designs, which are simple or complex. They can be used for communicating design concepts with design team members or customers and for ergonomics or for functional testing.

Classical methods such as milling, turning used to form an object involves removal of material by mechanical means. In Rapid Prototyping materials are added and bonded layer by layer to form an object (additive fabrication)

Several different RP technologies have emerged recently based on the technique used to add materials.

  • Stereo lithographic apparatus (SLA) – liquids which change into solids with the application of light.
  • Selective laser sintering (SLS) – bonding of powders
  • Fused deposition modelling (FDM) – extrusion of thermo plastics
  • Laminated object manufacturing (LOM) Lamination of thin layers

Stereo lithography (SLA) RP Technology provides the greatest accuracy and the best surface finish out of all these technologies.

Rapid prototyping Facility at University of Moratuwa

Sri Lanka is the third South Asian country to acquire RP technology.

The first RP facility in Sri Lanka was installed in August 2008 at the Engineering Design Centre of the University of Moratuwa with funding from the Ministry of Industrial Development and the National Science Foundation Sri Lanka. This facility consists of 3D Systems – Viper Si2 RP system with ultraviolet postcuring apparatus. It is based on Stereo lithography (SLA) technology and parts are prototyped using liquid photo reactive polymer materials. Parts up to 250x250x250mm in standard mode and 125x125x250mm in high resolution mode can be prototyped with a minimum feature size of 25um.

Rapid Prototyping Services

  • Rapid Development of SLA prototypes with excellent surface finish using polymeric materials if three – dimensional CAD models of parts are available in ether SolidWorks format, Pro/ENGINEER format or Solid model part files with the data stored in *SLT file extension.
  • Solid Modelling of parts using solid works or pro / ENGINEER software tools in collaboration with the Department of Mechanical Engineering University of Moratuwa.
  • Dissemination of Knowledge on Engineering Design, Rapid Prototyping and Digital Manufacturing.

These services will be available from December 20th onwards to potential customers.

Application Areas of RP

  • Small to medium size prototypes
  • Parts with extremely fine detail
  • Electrical and electronic parts
  • Jewellery models and patterns
  • Ceramic parts
  • Computer and business machine parts
  • Parts used in telecommunication
  • Medical Parts
  • Toys
  • Vehicular Parts…
